Choosing a domain name for a website can be a tricky task if you don’t know what to avoid and what to bare in mind.
This is why I’ve prepared this guide on How To Pick A Good Domain Name.
This guide will discuss what you should consider when choosing your domain name and what you want to avoid.
What Is A Domain Name
Now if you happen to not know what a domain name is then I’ll briefly explain what it is.
A domain name is technically speaking the address a website has on the internet which basically points to the website. So in other words for this website the domain name is yourathomebusiness.com which points to where all the files and content of this website is stored.
How To Pick A Good Domain Name
When picking a good domain you should bare in mind that your domain name should essentially be the name of your website. So your domain name could be the name of the brand you are trying to build or a keyword you researched. There is advantages to using either of those which I will go into further in this post. Your domain name should be able to give people some inclination of what your website is about.
Now what you also want to consider when choosing a good domain name is a good domain name extension. The domain name extension is in simple terms what comes after the “.” which in the case of my website is the “.com”. Now typically you want your website to have either a .com, .org or .net extension as they tend to rank higher in search engines.
EMD vs Brand Domain Name
An EMD or Exact Match Domain is name that is an exact match to the keyword you want your website to found under.
The brand domain is as I mentioned above is when your domain is the name of the brand you are trying to build or market. Now which is better to use you might ask, well let’s look at the advantages of each.
Advantages Of EMD:
- If the keyword is good (low competition and high traffic) then you have a better chance of getting traffic for that keyword
- Gives an idea of what the website is about for example the domain name is highqualityheadphones.com which is a keyword and would give visitors a good idea of what the website is about
Advantages Of Brand Domain Name:
- A brand is more marketable is than an exact match domain and allows you to make into what you want it to be
- Although the name of the brand wouldn’t be highly searched keyword after your site is trusted, a few people may still search your website and since it’s your brand name it wouldn’t have much competition and so you’d automatically rank high.
So as you can see the advantages are about equal and what it really comes down to is personal preference. Do you want to build a brand with your website about whatever you want it to be? Do you want to rank easier for a certain keyword that is broad? The answers to these questions would determine which you use.
Things To Avoid
Something you may want to avoid is putting hyphens (“-“), numbers or spelling errors in your domain name. The reason behind this is that you don’t want there to be any confusion about your website. So in the spirit of simplicity you should avoid these to create an easy experience getting to your for example if you wanted to tell someone the name of your website you don’t want to have to be telling them that their is a dash at any point or a number or have to spell it. I’m sure you’d want to be a simple few words spelt correctly all put together. On that note its also worth mentioned that it’s also easier to remember that way.
Also in the spirit of simplicity you should keep your domain names short preferably less than 15 characters.
Best Place To Buy Domain Names
I also want to show you where I believe is the best place to buy domain names and also where I get mine from. The domain name service provider is namecheap. The service is great and I have had no problems using them.
They are also no upsells like other domain name providers out there. You buy the domain name for the price which is usually $2-$15 and that’s it. It’s also worth mentioning how secure they are. I haven’t used any of the others recently but I know I feel incredibly safe having my domain name registered with namecheap.
