It is a strong belief of mine that affiliate marketing is hands down the best to make money online from a website. Affiliate marketing provides you with the ability to create a website about something you love or that interests you and help people find certain products relating to that topic and get paid for it.
The use of an affiliate program is what allows you to accomplish this. So choosing the right affiliate program is an important factor in your business and can help determine your level of success. This is why I want to show you how to find an affiliate program and what you should look for when choosing one.
What Is An Affiliate Program?
So what exactly is an affiliate program? Well, an affiliate program is essentially an agreement that a company or entity offers that allow you to promote their products and services and receive a commission when you direct someone to make a purchase.
So using the Amazon program as an example, which is known as the Amazon Associates. When you join their associates program you are eligible to promote ANY of products in their huge collection on the website. As a member, you receive your own unique link/banners for each product which you can then place on your website. If a purchase is made through this link/banner you receive a commission on that product.
This provides you with a tremendous amount of possibilities on different topics in which you can promote/review products on various articles on your website. That is of course as long as it is in your niche and it isn’t unrelated to what your website is about. You really don’t want to talk about car radios on a website that is about workout clothes.
How To Find An Affiliate Program
So onto finding these affiliate programs. Well, the finding part of things is actually the simplest aspect joining an affiliate program. You can simply do a search in google by typing in your niche in google followed by the keyword ‘affiliate program’. Another good option is searching through this keyword research tool.
Now you are presented with many options, you’ll find yourself asking which is the best for you to join. This is determined by a number of factors such as commission, authority and products. Considering these factors will help you decide if a particular program is right for you. I’ll explain each of these factors in greater detail.
Why Commission Matters
This one factor is almost self-explanatory as to why it is important. You do want money right? So it’s only natural for you to want to find an affiliate program that offers you a high percentage of the sales you make. You’ll definitely want to examine your options and think about which pays more.
The major reason why some people tend not to use the Amazon Associates is because they typically offer low percentages like 4%-10%. This is very low compared to the thousands of others out there and would work better for other niches than it would for others.
If you are in the niche of kitchen equipment, you’d have a variety of higher priced products to promote compared to someone in the niche of toys. Having a website about kitchen equipment could easily have you earning decent sums of money per sale. A product costing over $400 could be earning you at least $16 per sale which also increases the more sales you make.
Now that I think about it, that’s still very low even compared to a program that offers 10% which would be giving you $40 of that same sale. This is way better than the low commission that Amazon is offering there which makes them an unfavorable choice in this aspect but favorable in the next one.
Why I Think Authority Matters
A big reason a lot of people tend to go for Amazon (even me) is because it is so widely recognized and trusted. I personally don’t know anyone who has never heard of Amazon. The majority of people who have heard of Amazon have actually made a purchase.
This is why I think you’d make more sales if you were promoting a product on Amazon compared to one on a strange new site. You can simply put yourself in your visitor’s mind, how much more likely would a person be to purchase a product if they clicked your link and landed on Amazon compared to a new or unknown website.
Now don’t get me wrong, this is not to say that you shouldn’t join affiliate programs of websites that are new and unestablished. They are probably more likely to be paying very high commissions compared to Amazon and besides, they aren’t going to be new forever ;-). So you can go right ahead and get yourself that nice head start on the competition.
Along with the strong name and popularity, I’d say Amazon probably has the largest collection of products online. Amazon has just about everything on their website with maybe a few exceptions. This is a great option for people in terms of simplicity.
You can have several websites that promote products from Amazon under one account which would defeat the need for joining several affiliate programs.
Although their collection is broad, they may not be the best option for some niches. I’ll explain using an example like Bodybuilding.com. If your niche was bodybuilding, then they would be your better option because that is probably the biggest “go-to” source of bodybuilding products.
So you pretty much want to join an affiliate program that has the best selection of products in your niche. I mean you do have to be promoting and talking about so you should be confident that you are promoting quality products from a quality source.
A Great Alternative Idea
If looking around for all these programs isn’t your thing, another good idea you can consider is Affiliate Networks. An affiliate network is essentially a collection of affiliate programs. A lot of websites and companies opt for using affiliate networks because these networks are able to simplify things and potentially reach a larger audience of possible affiliates.
Affiliate networks handle a lot of the link tracking, reporting, and payouts responsibilities. Some websites also exclusively accept applications from these affiliate networks so you would have no choice but to join if you’re interested in their program. These networks would be the ones keeping track of your personal information. This would allow to find programs in your niche easier as well.
If you’re interested in this option, you can also find them the same way I mentioned you’d find an affiliate program. You can simply perform a google search for “affiliate networks” which you would find plenty of options to join.
